The 4 Chinese teams at Worlds 2020 couldn’t secure a spot for this year’s tournament.

The LPL Representatives at the 2020 League of Legends World Championship

The 2020 League of Legends World Championship saw the four representatives from the LPL (League of Legends Pro League) face difficulties during the splits. They failed to requalify for the tournament, with Top Esports being the final team to be eliminated by LNG Esports.

Mixed Results for LPL Teams

The Summer Split was challenging for the LPL teams. Top Esports, Suning, JD Gaming, and LGD Gaming had a mixed performance, with two of them failing to make it to the playoffs and thus missing the chance to qualify for Worlds. LGD Gaming and JD Gaming finished 11th and 12th during the regular season, while Top Esports and Suning finished fifth and ninth, respectively.

New Opportunities for Rising Stars

The LPL region is known for its diverse talent spread across multiple teams. This diversity has elevated the power of all squads and allowed rising stars to challenge and surpass established favorites, even in the World Championship. This year’s Worlds will see a number of new teams competing alongside the familiar names.

To get a sense of the high level of competition in the LPL, LNG Esports, who eliminated Top Esports and Suning from the playoffs, displayed a controlled playstyle led by their former Griffin jungler Tarzan. Tarzan’s ability to read his opponents like a book led his team to clean victories.

Potential Winners and Surprise Performances

With four Worlds spots up for grabs, both well-known and lesser-known teams have an opportunity to make it to the tournament. Teams like FPX, EDG, and RNG have already proven themselves on the international stage, while unproven teams like Rare Atom, Team WE, and Bilibili Gaming can still surprise fans.

The upcoming LPL playoffs will feature Bilibili Gaming facing off against Team WE at 4am CT.
