Splyce suffers setback in surprise defeat to DetonatioN FocusMe at Worlds 2019.

Upsets at Worlds Day Three

Worlds day three has been a day of surprises. Unicorns of Love secured another victory against Clutch Gaming. It’s no longer a shock when they win. Furthermore, DetonatioN FocusMe from the LJL defeated Europe’s Splyce, earning their first win in the play-in stage.

Splyce’s Unexpected Loss

Splyce had a smooth first day in the play-in groups, and they expected the same for today. Despite having champions like Hecarim and LeBlanc, who can make an impact early on, Splyce chose to farm and let DFM do as they pleased.

DFM took advantage of Splyce’s passive play and secured the first kill in the bot lane. While this happened, Splyce’s jungler Andrei Dragomir took Krugs. Vizicsacsi, Splyce’s top laner, built AP on Kennen, making it impossible for him to fight the enemy Gnar. As a result, Splyce had two losing lanes.

However, Splyce stuck to their usual gameplan of scaling and winning through teamfights. In the first teamfight near the infernal drake, Vizicsacsi missed his ult, losing the AP advantage, and Splyce lost the drake. A few minutes later, DFM’s support Gaeng showed off his Thresh skills, securing his team the Baron. The subsequent push with Baron ended the game in DFM’s favor.

Splyce’s Strategy Needs Improvement

This loss shouldn’t be a major setback for Splyce, as they still have control over the group with a 2-1 record. However, Splyce has been playing in this passive style for years. They need to start making proactive plays in the early game if they want to go further in the tournament.

A Victory for DFM

For DFM, this win puts them back on track. They were strong contenders in the MSI play-in stage earlier this year, and now they are tied with Isurus for the second spot in the knockout rounds of Group B.
