Riot’s Innovative Approach: Testing ‘Virtual Pass’ to Enhance Fan Engagement at Worlds 2023 in LoL Esports

Riot Games Unveils Plans for Enhanced Fan Experience at 2023 League of Legends World Championship

Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, has announced its plans for a new fan experience at the upcoming 2023 World Championship. The aim is to enhance the immersion for dedicated fans during the highly anticipated event.

Improving the Esports Experience for Global Fans

In a recent blog post, Riot’s president of esports, John Needham, highlighted the differences between traditional sports and esports. While live events generate revenue through ticket sales, concessions, and merchandise, esports draws a larger virtual audience from around the world. As a result, Riot is developing a virtual ticket program to cater to these fans and generate revenue for the company and competing teams.

Introducing the “Virtual Pass”

The Virtual Pass will serve as a bridge between online and live engagement, providing fans with an enhanced experience during the tournament. Along with access to exclusive content, the pass will offer Worlds skin variants, in-game event passes, unique merchandise, and sponsor goods. Riot plans to create team-specific versions of these passes, allowing fans to connect with their favorite teams on a deeper level and potentially communicate with players through exclusive team channels.

Expanding the Experience to VALORANT

Riot aims to expand this enhanced fan experience to the competitive VALORANT scene in 2024. This will include unique in-game cameras, venue coverage, digital collectibles, and the opportunity for fan messages to be displayed during broadcasts. The new Virtual Pass will bring fans closer to the action and create an immersive experience, even from the comfort of their own homes.
