Riot unveils new comic and music video showcasing Varus’ revamped lore

Varus Gets a Major Update to His Lore Page

Varus, the bow wielding AD carry, has received a significant update to his lore page. Riot Games has released a digital comic book that revamps the backstory of the champion. The comic book consists of three acts, with the second act being told through an animated music video.

A New Story for Varus

The comic tells the tale of Valmar and Kai, two Ionian Hunters who eventually become Varus. In an attempt to save Valmar, who was severely injured in a battle against Noxus soldiers, Kai takes him to the well where the Cursed bow of Varus, an old Darkin, lies. Varus saves Valmar’s life by fusing with both Valmar and Kai, taking control of Valmar’s body and becoming the purple archer we know today.

A Different Lore from Before

This updated lore marks a significant departure from Varus’ old backstory. Previously, he was an honorable warden seeking vengeance after his village was massacred. While Varus’ character has changed with this update, Riot made sure to keep the Noxian invasion part of his story intact.

Varus’ Popularity Grows in Competitive Play

This updated lore comes at a time when Varus is experiencing a surge in popularity in competitive play. Although the 2018 season has not yet begun, Varus has been a popular pick in the Korean Kespa Cup tournament. With the kleptomancy Ezreal being frequently banned, Korean teams have turned to Varus and Miss Fortune as their go-to AD carries.
