Understanding the League of Legends Loot System
In 2018, League of Legends introduced a new loot system with changes to the honor system and the introduction of champion capsules. However, players were left in the dark about how exactly this system worked. Thankfully, Riot has finally revealed the statistics behind the game’s loot, shedding light on our chances of getting those coveted skins.
Hextech Chests and Masterwork Chests
Have you ever earned an S-grade on your favorite champion only to receive a champion shard for a different champion? The loot system could be frustrating like that. It seemed like there was no rhyme or reason to what players would get from these chests. However, Riot has clarified a few things about the Hextech Chest system.
Firstly, all skins in the Hextech Chest system have the same odds of dropping, so the chances of getting an ultimate skin are just as likely as any other skin. Additionally, ultimate and mythic skin shards automatically redeem themselves as permanent skins, saving players the trouble of unlocking them with Orange Essence.
Furthermore, the loot system has built-in “bad luck protection,” meaning players won’t go three chests without picking up a skin shard. However, this protection does not apply to Gemstones, which have an even worse drop rate. Players cannot go 50 chests without picking up a Gemstone.
It’s also worth noting that it is possible to get another Hextech Chest/Key bonus combo from an opened Hextech Chest/Key bonus combo. The chances of getting a Hextech Exclusive Skin from a chest is approximately one in 2,500 chests.
Improving Transparency
Riot’s decision to release this data and statistics list is part of their effort to improve transparency with regards to loot and microtransactions. While the loot system is relatively new, microtransactions have been a part of the game for years. Now, players will have a better understanding of what they can expect when purchasing chests and keys from the shop.
