Riot to Reduce Number of In-Client Visual Novels for Future League Events Following Several Flops

Andrei “Meddler” van Roon Takes Over as Head of Riot Studio

Andrei “Meddler” van Roon, a veteran game designer at Riot Games, is now the head of the Riot studio. With a wealth of experience designing champions like Ziggs, Syndra, and Varus, Meddler is excited to bring his ideas to improve League of Legends, Wild Rift, and Teamfight Tactics.

Learning from Mistakes: Lessons from Recent Events

In a recent interview with Polygon, Meddler openly discussed the successes and failures of Riot’s recent Sentinel and Star Guardian events. He acknowledged that these events did not live up to the players’ expectations, especially when compared to the popular Spirit Blossom event. Meddler recognized that relying too heavily on visual novels may not be the best approach for future events, stating, “It was great for Spirit Blossom, it’s a great tool to have in our repertoire, but it’s not something to lean on constantly.”

Exploring New Avenues for Engaging Events

The Riot team is actively exploring different approaches to large-scale events and intertwining storylines. While they recognize the need to improve the battle pass system and thematic events, they are also looking beyond storytelling alone. The team aims to enhance the in-client interactive features and introduce fresh art styles to create a more immersive experience for players.

Expanding the League of Legends Universe

Although some fully-fledged events may not return, Riot is expanding the League of Legends universe beyond the game itself. Fans can find content in other mediums such as comics, music, TV shows, and books, offering more ways to stay connected to their favorite League characters and stories.
