Riot reveals near miss for Unicorns of Love at Worlds 2020

Unicorns of Love Nearly Missed 2020 World Championship, Reveals Riot Games

Unicorns of Love, a popular team in the European League of Legends scene, almost didn’t make it to the 2020 World Championship. According to John Needham, Riot Games’ global head of esports, the team faced challenges that could have prevented their attendance at the tournament. However, the exact reason for these challenges was not disclosed.

Riot Games’ media preview for Worlds 2020 shed more light on the situation. Needham mentioned that it was “a little tough getting them there,” while David Higdon, Riot’s head of global esports communications, revealed that there were numerous calls and meetings regarding the team.

In a surprising move, Riot even made arrangements for Gambit Esports, the second-place team in the LCL, to travel to Shanghai as a possible replacement if Unicorns of Love couldn’t attend. As a result, Gambit has been in quarantine in China. However, now that Unicorns of Love have received clearance to attend Worlds, Gambit will likely be returning to Europe.

Bringing all the teams to Shanghai has been a challenging task for Riot this year. PSG Talon, for instance, will enter the Worlds 2020 play-in stage with substitute players due to visa issues.

Unicorns of Love: The Dark Horse of Worlds 2020

Despite the hurdles they faced, the Unicorns of Love had an exceptional season in the LCL. They remained undefeated throughout the regular season and only dropped one game in the 2020 LCL Summer Split playoffs against Gambit. Considered the strongest team in the region, they have the potential to surprise some top organizations at Worlds, which is set to begin on September 25.
