Riot Reveals Hwei, League of Legends’ Forthcoming ‘Artistic Mid Laner’

The Next League of Legends Champion Revealed: Meet Hwei

The highly anticipated release of the next League of Legends champion has finally been announced. In a recent update from the LoL developers, Lexi Gao, the lead of the champions team, revealed some exciting details about the upcoming additions to the game. One of the champions, who had been teased earlier in the year, now has a name: Hwei.

The LoL development team had teased several new releases at the beginning of 2023, including Naafiri, Milio, and an unnamed “hangry jungler” who has been revealed as Briar. They also hinted at the introduction of an “artistic mid laner,” who is now officially known as Hwei.

Hwei: The Artistic Mid Laner

Hwei’s role as a painter has been teased, although no visuals have been unveiled yet. However, a piece of complementary art featuring bright colors and abstract stylization was briefly displayed during the update.

According to Lexi Gao, Hwei owes his skills to his previous masters, but he has evolved and developed his own unique style. With an extensive palette of possibilities, he is constantly learning, experimenting, and mastering his craft.

While Hwei is described as a “somber” champion, his art is visually stunning. He will fulfill the role of a traditional AP mid laner, a familiar archetype for experienced League of Legends players.

Low Output of New Champions in 2023

This year has seen a relatively low number of champion releases in League of Legends, with only three additions to the roster so far. If Hwei does not debut until 2024, it will mark the lowest number of champion releases in a single year. In 2021, four champions were released, and five were released in 2022. To compensate for this, Riot has been focusing on extensive updates and reworks to existing champions, including Ahri, Jax, Rell, and Neeko.

Release Date for Hwei

At this time, a specific release date for Hwei has not been announced. However, it is expected that he will soon become available on the Public Beta Environment (PBE) and that his official release will occur before the end of 2023.
