Riot Provides Insight on Balancing Mythic and Legendary Items in League of Legends

Riot Games Reveals Framework for Balancing Items in League of Legends Preseason 2021

Riot Games recently announced its plans for balancing the newest items in League of Legends for the upcoming 2021 preseason. In a developer blog post, the company unveiled the framework that will guide the balancing process.

In the previous week, Riot introduced Mythic items to players, which will play a central role in the game’s item system overhaul for the next season. These special items have the unique ability to enhance other key items in a player’s build.

The balancing of League’s items will be based on three criteria: popularity, power, and poaching. Popularity refers to whether certain items are consistently bought across their respective classes. For example, mage champions often feel compelled to purchase items like Luden’s Echo due to its significant power.

Riot will analyze the frequency of item purchases and compare their win rates to other items. This analysis is crucial for promoting diversity in builds and preventing players from exclusively relying on a single powerful item.

Poaching takes into account cases where champions from different classes frequently purchase the same item. If an item is being used by multiple classes, regardless of their role, it could indicate that the item is too strong and needs adjustments.

Mythic items, on the other hand, will be evaluated for buffs if they are not purchased enough compared to their competitors or if they have significantly different win rates compared to other items.

Riot aims to ensure that no champion relies on the same Mythic item more than 75 percent of the time and that no champion has a single Mythic item with a six percent higher win rate than all other options.
