Riot plans to revamp Aurelion Sol’s abilities to embody the ‘dragon fantasy’ in League of Legends

Riot to Give Aurelion Sol a Fresh Start in League of Legends

Riot plans to completely revamp Aurelion Sol in League of Legends, similar to what they did with Urgot and Sion. The goal is to create an “entirely new kit” for the champion while still maintaining thematic cohesiveness, according to Riot’s blog post.

In order to emphasize Aurelion Sol’s “dragon fantasy,” Riot believes that the champion’s current design falls short. Although these changes may take some time, Riot aims to release them by the end of the year.

When Aurelion Sol was released in 2016, players were initially excited. However, his play rate declined rapidly in the following weeks and months, making him one of the least played champions in the game.

Riot admits that this is due to a lack of delivery on gameplay that matches the excitement of a “gigantic, arrogant star dragon.” Rather than making minor adjustments, Riot has decided on a Comprehensive Gameplay Update (CGU) for Aurelion Sol.

The purpose of a CGU is to update gameplay for champions that have high-quality visuals and story, but fail to deliver on gameplay fantasies. This update is also targeted at champions with complex gameplay issues that cannot be resolved with just a few ability changes.

Aurelion Sol will be the first champion to undergo a CGU. Riot will rebuild his kit while preserving the same model, theme, and narrative. If this rework proves successful, Riot may consider applying the same approach to other champions in the future.
