Riot intensifies big ranked changes as League of Legends season extends into 3 splits

Riot Games Working on Changes to League of Legends Ranked Climb and Season Resets

Riot Games is making additional changes to the ranked climb system in League of Legends, as well as how seasons reset. These adjustments are part of a plan to transition to a three-split setup by 2024, according to Riot’s senior design lead Jordan “BarackProbama” Checkman.

While the specifics have not yet been finalized, the League developers are already closely working on implementing several tweaks for the game’s main mode. These changes include increasing LP gains for players who win matches, reducing the number of placement games required each split, and implementing a softer reset when the ladder restarts.

These adjustments will be similar to the changes implemented with the two-split setup. Currently, the first split begins in January, followed by the second split in June or July. Between these two competitive brackets, Riot performs a soft reset of matchmaking ratings and player ranks.

The Plan for Season 14

The League development team aims to adjust both the timing and reset mechanics of the ranked climb. However, some League players believe that these changes are not enough. They have expressed concerns about the matchmaking rating (MMR) system and the lack of divisional promotional games.

Additionally, some players feel that Riot has made too many changes to the game for the 2024 season. The issues raised include concerns about the prestige of ranks, the speed at which players can achieve them, and the number of splits. Some players even called the move to splits a “colossal failure” and asked for a complete reversion.

Despite these concerns, it appears that the three-split system is set to be implemented. The exact timeline for these changes has not been confirmed, but it is likely that they will be released in patch 13.24, which is expected to be the preseason update on December 6th.

It’s important to note that until these changes are officially released on League servers, there is still a possibility that they may be scrapped or modified.
