Riot implements major updates to mage itemization

Riot Games Announces Enormous Changes to Mage Itemization

In an effort to provide players with more choices, Riot Games has been making significant changes to mage champions in League of Legends. From experimenting with mages in the jungle to converting support mages to the mid lane, the goal has been to diversify their playstyle. The latest step in this process is the announcement of enormous changes to mage itemization.

This change covers nearly every AP item in the game. One notable change is the renaming of Morellonomicon. Additionally, new items like Spellbound Orb have been introduced to give spellcasters more ways to express their playstyle.

Key Changes to Early Itemization

Riot wanted to give players more options in the early lane phase without overwhelming them. To achieve this, they made a tweak to a key early item called Lost Chapter. Lost Chapter, known for its efficiency in providing mana and AP, now also includes CDR (Cooldown Reduction). However, the cost has been increased by 200 to 1,100 gold. This change makes Lost Chapter even more essential in the early game.

Furthermore, Lost Chapter now builds into three different items: Hextech GLP, Luden’s Echo, and Archangel’s Staff. These items all benefit from a 20% increase in CDR but offer different effects based on a player’s preferred playstyle.

Changes to Morellonomicon and Liandry’s Torment

Morellonomicon, now named Morello’s Cursed Tome, no longer builds directly from Lost Chapter. Instead, it requires a new intermediate item called Orb of Shadow. This change makes Morello’s Cursed Tome a more niche item overall, focusing on early penetration with flat magic pen and the ability to apply Grievous Wounds.

Additionally, Liandry’s Torment no longer provides magic penetration. The new item will instead increase the damage dealt by champions. This change will require AP tanks like Vladimir and Amumu to adapt their playstyle.

Introduction of New Items

The first new item, Spellbound Orb, is a high-risk, high-reward item designed for the early game. It offers 100 AP and a 10% increase in movement speed. This item also features a charge effect, granting movement speed and AP based on the number of spells cast in its vicinity.

The second new item, Twin Shadows, is a reboot of the old item that was removed in Patch 5.22. This item is focused on enabling roaming and does not build out of a support item.

These changes are set to revolutionize the gameplay for AP champions. While the tweaks are still being finalized, players can expect to see them soon on the Public Beta Environment (PBE). For more details on all the item changes, visit Riot’s release page.
