Riot Explores Format Changes for Upcoming LoL World Championships Following Successful Swiss Stage

Worlds 2023: Exciting Changes for Next Year’s Tournament

The highly anticipated Worlds 2023 is nearing its conclusion, with only the final match between T1 and Weibo Gaming left to be played. During a press conference on Nov. 15, Riot Games, the creator of League of Legends, expressed their satisfaction with the new tournament format while also hinting at potential improvements for next year.

Jeremy Lee, the executive producer of League of Legends, shared his thoughts on the future of the event, stating, “I’m really, really happy with the way that this turned out. And so I know that there’s some tweaks we wanna make for next year, but I think we’re gonna, we’re gonna roll it back.”

Although Riot did not delve into specifics, it’s clear from their enthusiasm that they are pleased with this year’s format. We can expect only minor adjustments, if any, for the future.

Fortunately, fans share Riot’s sentiment and have embraced the new format. The introduction of the Swiss stage, inspired by other successful esports like Counter-Strike, has revitalized the World Championship, which was starting to feel monotone and predictable.

League of Legends esports enthusiasts have expressed their appreciation for the format change, agreeing that it brings a much-needed breath of fresh air to the tournament.

One notable outcome of the new format is the breaking of viewership records. The semifinal match between T1 and JDG on Nov. 12 reached higher peak viewership than the Worlds 2021 final, with over four million viewers tuning in. Undoubtedly, this year’s grand final will shatter another record.
