Rekkles on Last Year’s Coaching Approach: “It Felt Like Being Told What to Do Instead of Collaborating”

Fnatic’s Star AD Carry Shares Insight into Coaching and Roster Issues

Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, the star AD carry for Fnatic, recently revealed the challenges faced by the team’s coaching staff and roster, hindering their potential for success.

During an interview on the LEC broadcast, Rekkles expressed his satisfaction with the new support staff, particularly with the addition of retired pro Alfonso “Mithy” Aguirre Rodríguez as the head coach, replacing Joey “YoungBuck” Steltenpool.

According to Rekkles, there was an issue last year where the coaches were dictating the team’s actions instead of engaging in discussions. He believes that esports hasn’t reached the point where coaches can simply command players like soldiers.

Rekkles emphasized the importance of healthy communication between players and coaches, especially during draft phases and champion selection. He believes that even if it results in suboptimal drafts, ensuring everyone’s happiness and comfort with their chosen champions is vital for a successful team.

The previous year, Fnatic experienced an identity crisis due to some players being forced to play champions they weren’t comfortable with. Rekkles argues that while most teams have to adhere to the meta, neglecting player input limits their potential.

On the other hand, G2 Esports demonstrates effective communication with players through their coach, Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann. This team allows players to occasionally select unconventional champions while staying relatively close to the meta. This creative and unpredictable approach made G2 Esports one of the toughest teams to face in 2019.

With a new coach and coaching staff, Fnatic seems to be experiencing better team satisfaction this year. They are determined to reclaim their position at the top in 2020. Don’t miss Fnatic in action during the fifth week of the Spring Split.
