Rekkles Disappointed with Remote Format of LEC Spring Split Finals Due to COVID-19 Outbreak
Fnatic superstar AD carry Rekkles, who was a finalist in the 2018 Worlds for League of Legends, expressed his disappointment with the online nature of the 2020 LEC Spring Split finals. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the event had to be held remotely. Rekkles stated, “Playing the finals here was super weird. It’s not something I would want to do again.” However, he remains hopeful that by early September, they will be able to return to the studio for events.
Rekkles Desires the Excitement of Big Crowds
Rekkles, accustomed to large crowds, cheers, and adrenaline, shared his preference for in-person events. He stated, “I like when my blood gets rolling, it gets me hyped up.” While he understands that some newer players may feel more comfortable playing from home, he believes that many others are used to the energy of big crowds.
COVID-19’s Impact on Esports Events
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected esports events worldwide, including the League of Legends finals in various regions. To prioritize the health and safety of players and staff, Riot Games adapted their regional championships to an online format. While the LEC and LCS have retained the online format, the LPL resumed games offline without viewers. However, recent restrictions announced by Beijing may also lead to a return to an online format for the LPL.
