Reclaiming their Momentum: Evil Geniuses Rejuvenate, Seek Retribution Against DetonatioN FocusMe at Worlds 2022

Evil Geniuses impresses with dominant win over DetonatioN FocusMe

Evil Geniuses (EG), the third seed from North America, showcased their prowess in a convincing victory against DetonatioN FocusMe (DFM). This win has boosted EG’s confidence as they gear up for a crucial showdown against LOUD for the second seed in their Worlds 2022 play-in group.

Recovering from previous loss

In their earlier game against DFM, EG faced difficulties in late-game teamfights. The team got caught out on flanks, with Impact on Aatrox often being the culprit. As a result, EG let DFM, the champions of the LJL, gain an advantage and eventually suffer a defeat. This loss was reminiscent of past international tournaments for NA teams.

EG secures side selection in tiebreaker

Despite the loss, EG had an advantage in the tiebreaker due to their shorter average win time in their previous victories. They chose the blue side for the matchup, aiming to capitalize on their 3-0 record on that side.

A confident draft for EG

EG drafted a composition that showcased their confidence and comfort. Impact played Aatrox, a champion with a high win rate at Worlds. Vulcan and Kaori picked Thresh and Aphelios, respectively, while jojopyun chose Akali and Inspired went for Trundle. DFM opted for a full dive composition with Hecarim, Vex, Kai’Sa, and Sett.

Early-game dominance

EG’s solo laners, Impact and jojopyun, made a significant impact in the early game. Each secured a level two gank and a solo kill, giving EG a 2,000 gold lead. It was crucial for EG to maintain their dominance and avoid repeating their previous mistakes.

EG secures a resounding victory

Both jojopyun, the youngest player in the play-ins, and Impact, the oldest player, showcased exceptional skills and coordination with their team. Inspired, Kaori, and Vulcan also played a vital role in EG’s victory, with Vulcan’s Thresh performance being particularly noteworthy.

Next steps for EG

With their win against DFM, EG advances to face LOUD. The winner of this matchup will avoid a best-of-five against reigning MSI champions RNG and will instead await the winner of the MAD Lions and Saigon Buffalo series. DFM will compete against the loser of the EG versus LOUD contest in a best-of-five series for a chance to play RNG for a spot in the Worlds group stage.
