Riot Games Drops Cost of Volcanic Wukong Skin in Support of Taal Volcano Relief Efforts
Riot Games has announced that the cost of the Volcanic Wukong skin in the Filipino League of Legends client has been reduced to only one RP until Jan. 31. This move aims to raise awareness for the ongoing activity of the Taal Volcano, which began erupting earlier this month, spewing ash and lava fountains. To further support the relief efforts, Riot Games has also provided recommendations on how people can protect themselves from the aftermath of the eruption.
Authorities have already evacuated over 25,000 people since Jan. 12, fearing a catastrophic eruption in the coming days. However, many residents near the volcano have chosen to stay in their homes, putting themselves at risk of ash falls and earthquakes.
In response to the crisis, various humanitarian associations, including PETA Asia and the Red Cross, have begun providing aid to Filipino residents and wildlife affected by the disaster. This initiative mirrors the calls made by gamers a few weeks ago, urging game publishers to assist in the bushfire crisis in Australia.
League of Legends players had requested Riot to sell the Tristana firefighter skin and donate the profits to Australian associations. Similarly, the Overwatch community showcased concept art for a Firefighter Roadhog skin that Blizzard could release to raise funds, drawing inspiration from their previous Pink Mercy skin campaign that supported breast cancer research in 2018.
Activision has also joined in to support the relief efforts for the Australian fires by donating all sales from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Outback pack. The pack has been renamed as the Outback Relief bundle and will be available for purchase until Jan. 31, coinciding with the end of the discounted Volcanic Wukong skin offer.
