Over 50% of League of Legends’ Major Region Playoff Series Extend to 5 Games This Weekend

Intense Weekend of League of Legends Playoffs

This weekend was packed with thrilling matches in professional League of Legends. Across the game’s major regions, there were 11 best-of-five playoff series, and more than half of them went all the way to five games to determine the winner.

Close Matches in Multiple Regions

Most major regions had at least one playoff series that required five games to decide a winner. The only exception was the LCK, where the lone playoff match of the week was settled in three games, with Gen.G sweeping T1 to win the Summer Split finals.

Similarly, two of the three best-of-fives in Europe’s LEC this weekend went to five games. Fnatic had an impressive reverse sweep of Excel in the first round of the lower bracket.

In North America, the LCS hosted four playoff series across the upper and lower brackets. It seemed like all four series would go to a fifth game, but the final match between Evil Geniuses and Cloud9 ended in the fourth game.

Upcoming LPL Grand Final

The LPL still has its grand final series to play. The Chinese league has an extensive playoff bracket with both single and double elimination. On Thursday, Sept. 1, JD Gaming and Top Esports will have a rematch of their five-game semifinal bout.

Post-Playoff Qualifier Tournaments

The LCK and LPL will have post-playoff qualifier tournaments for teams that accrued enough Championship Points but didn’t qualify for Worlds directly. These regional qualifiers will take place from Sept. 1 to 4 in Korea and China, separate from the Summer Split playoffs.

Representatives from the major regions will compete in the 2022 League of Legends World Championship, starting on Sept. 29.
