‘Non-Believers Tried to Dampen My Spirit’: Deft Reflects on Overcoming Obstacles to Win Worlds 2022

League of Legends Veteran Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu Finally Wins Worlds

Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, a seasoned player of League of Legends, has achieved his long-standing dream of winning the Summoner’s Cup after a decade of effort. Following the excitement and initial impressions, Deft candidly discussed his journey to becoming a World champion and the many obstacles he encountered along the way.

Overcoming Doubt and Injuries

“Now that some time has passed, I realize that this isn’t a dream. Every day, people told me that I wouldn’t win Worlds. They said I was finished because of my injuries or that I was too old,” said Deft in a translation by Korizon’s Ashley Kang. Two years ago, Deft suffered a severe lower back injury, leading many to believe that his career as a 26-year-old AD carry was over.

A Message of Hope and Perseverance

“It took me 10 years to prove them wrong. I hope that our victory can inspire those who are going through even tougher times than me. In the end, an unbreakable spirit is what truly matters… This year has been so much fun,” added Deft.

A Remarkable Career

Deft’s journey began in 2013, during the early days of the League of Legends esports scene, as a member of MVP Blue at OLYMPUS Champions Spring 2013.

A Year of Happiness and Gratitude

“You supported me, even when I didn’t deserve it, and as a result, this has been the happiest year of my life. Thank you, always,” concluded Deft, celebrating his victory over T1 in the finals of Worlds 2022.

Throughout his career, Deft, together with AD carry prodigy Jian “Uzi” Zi-Hao, has established himself as one of the best marksmen players in the game’s history. His unwavering consistency, dedication, and mechanical prowess have earned him this esteemed reputation.

At Worlds 2022, Deft and DRX emerged as the dark horse of the competition, dominating T1 with his exceptional picks of Varus and Caitlyn. His performance proved that he is a true champion and that, even after all these years, he is still capable of standing tall against the likes of Faker.
