No VCS Presence at Worlds 2022? Riot’s Head of Esports Working Towards Team Participation

Fingers Crossed for VCS Teams at 2022 League of Legends World Championship

Visa issues are causing concern for VCS teams hoping to compete in the upcoming 2022 League of Legends World Championship. According to reports, multiple teams from the region have had their visa applications declined.

The VCS Summer 2022 champions, GAM Esports, who are Vietnam’s top seed, reportedly had their application for U.S. visas declined. However, they will have another opportunity to re-apply in two weeks. It’s a race against time for them to secure their visas before the tournament begins. Additionally, Saigon Buffalo is also facing challenges in obtaining a visa for Mexico, putting the region at risk of missing Worlds once again.

Hope for VCS Teams

Naz Aletaha, Riot Games’ global esports head, responded to the reports on social media, expressing the organization’s efforts to help GAM Esports. They are working closely with government representatives to try and ensure GAM’s attendance at Worlds. However, there is still a possibility that their visa applications could be declined, preventing both teams from participating in the biggest tournament of the year.

Struggles for VCS at International Events

Since 2019, the VCS has been unable to attend a World Championship and has missed out on multiple international events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The only international event they have been able to participate in recently is the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational, where Saigon Buffalo reached the Rumble stage of the tournament.

Uncertainty and Potential Adjustments

If the VCS is unable to attend Worlds this year, it is unclear which teams will take their place, and whether the tournament schedule will be adjusted accordingly. It is possible that other major regions may be granted additional slots, or minor region teams may have the opportunity to compete. The situation will become clearer as the tournament approaches.

Worlds 2022 is set to begin on Thursday, Sept. 29 with the play-in stage.
