MSI 2024 to Make Long-Awaited Return to China after 2016

Chinese Teams Dominate MSI and Could Get Homefield Advantage in 2024

In the history of League of Legends competition, Chinese teams have consistently performed at the top. They have won the last three Mid-Season Invitational championships and, according to reports from Korean news outlet Naver, MSI 2024 is rumored to be hosted in Chengdu, China.

Although Riot Games has not confirmed the tournament’s location, fans are already excited about the potential return to mainland China.

A Look Back at MSI 2016 in China

In 2016, China hosted MSI in Shanghai, where the exceptional SK Telecom T1 emerged as the champions once again. They defeated Royal Never Give Up in the semifinals and CLG in the finals to secure another victory. The tournament was a huge success for the Chinese region.

LPL Dominates MSI Since 2018

Since 2018, the LPL (Chinese League of Legends Pro League) has been dominant at MSI. RNG has won three out of the last five tournaments, with G2 Esports being the only team to break their streak in 2019. Even with the introduction of a new format allowing two representatives from each region, Chinese teams have consistently outperformed their competitors at MSI.

This year, JD Gaming emerged as the champions, defeating Bilibili Gaming and showcasing their potential for a Grand Slam at the 2023 World Championship. If the rumored hosting of MSI 2024 in Chengdu becomes a reality, JDG and other Chinese teams may enjoy the support of their home crowd.
