Marc Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games, playfully suggests potential for a LoL MMO—rather intriguing notion!

Riot Games’ Future: A League of Legends MMO?

There’s a running joke about Riot Games, the publisher behind League of Legends, that the “s” in their name stands for “singular.” That’s because so far, they have only published one real game. Although Riot has hinted at other projects and released some concepts, there hasn’t been any sign of a new game coming from them.

However, on Tuesday, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill jokingly tweeted about the possibility of creating a League of Legends-based MMO. This tweet set the League community abuzz with excitement and anticipation.

The reaction from key figures in the community was swift, passionate, and overwhelmingly positive. Many supported the idea and criticized Merrill for potentially teasing them with the concept. The reason for this excitement is that a League of Legends MMO is actually a very good idea.

A Perfect Opportunity for League of Legends

While League of Legends may not directly challenge World of Warcraft as a traditional MMO, it has its own rich story and lore to offer. These aspects of the game continue to improve over time. An MMO would provide the perfect platform to fully explore this history and create an immersive experience for League of Legends’ dedicated fanbase.

Although some players may worry that an MMO would distract from the core five-vs-five gameplay that has defined League of Legends for many years, it’s likely that some players are already leaving the game anyway. An MMO could attract a whole new class of fans to the franchise.

Solving Problems and Broadening the Player Experience

New players often face challenges such as a steep learning curve, long game times, and toxic behavior from teammates in competitive matches. An MMO could address many of these issues. It would allow players to form emotional connections with League of Legends’ characters and stories, and if they still want to compete on Summoner’s Rift, they can do so as well.

While there will always be players who love League of Legends for the thrill of competition, it’s important to acknowledge that there are different ways to enjoy the franchise. An MMO could serve as a bridge to bring different types of players into the League of Legends universe.

Riot Games’ Next Move

While Merrill’s tweet was likely meant as a joke, it could actually be one of his best ideas. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see what Riot Games has in store for the future. But for now, it’s back to perfecting Ryze for the thirteenth time.
