Major Issue Looms for Korea’s LoL National Team Selection at Hangzhou Asian Games

Esports at 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games: Selection Criteria for Korean League of Legends Team Revealed

The upcoming 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games will feature esports as an official medal event for the first time ever. In this competition, there will be a total of seven different esports titles, including the popular game, League of Legends.

In recent news, the Korean e-Sports Association announced the selection criteria for its League of Legends national team. However, there are some concerns about how the players will be chosen.

According to a report from Inven, Korean players who want to participate in the selection process must be above the age of 16 and compete in one of the major regions (LCS, LEC, LCK, or LPL) as of February 2023.

The association will also take into account the results from all major domestic and international tournaments, from the summer of 2021 to the 2023 MSI. This is a change from the previous four-year review period. Individual accolades, such as All-Pros, Player of the game, and MVP awards, will also be considered.

Additionally, there will be a secondary review index that considers the players’ personal stats, including KDAs, DPM, Vision Score, and more. Role-specific stats will also be taken into consideration.

Gen.G’s CEO, Arnold Hur, expressed doubts about the stats-based index, stating that it’s a difficult problem to solve. He mentioned that there may be instances where individually strong players are excluded due to their team-driven stats.

In response, Tim Sevenhuysen, director of esports analytics at 100Thieves, said that he would never solely rely on LoL stats when selecting players for a team. He emphasized that LoL is a complex game with contextual intricacies.

The initial selections for the national team will have a minimum of three and a maximum of four players per role. The final roster, consisting of six players, will be locked in by early June. Former DK athletic director and T1 head coach Kim “kkOma” Jeong-gyun will be the head coach for the national team.

Apart from League of Legends, Korea will also compete in three other esports competitions at the Hangzhou Asian Games: FIFA Online 4, Street Fighter 5, and PUBG Mobile.

The 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games were originally scheduled to take place in 2021 but were postponed to 2023 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The tournament will begin on September 23 and run until October 8.
