MAD Lions coach suggests Asian LoL teams possess a significant edge over other regions

Chinese and Korean Teams Dominate European and North American Ones at Mid-Season Invitational 2023

At the Mid-Season Invitational 2023, Chinese and Korean teams have emerged as the dominant forces, convincingly defeating their European and North American counterparts. After MAD Lions suffered a 3-0 loss to T1, their head coach, James “Mac” MacCormack, highlighted a key difference between Western and Eastern teams in terms of gameplay.

Teamfighting: The Key Strength of LCK and LPL Teams

In an interview with PentaQ Esports on May 10, Mac explained that there are several differences between Western and Eastern teams, but the biggest one is teamfighting. He emphasized how the teamfighting of LCK and LPL teams, particularly around dragons and Nashors, is remarkably superior to that of Western teams.

According to Mac, teamfighting played a significant role in MAD Lions’ series against T1. Despite gaining a significant early lead in the first game, MAD was unable to convert it into a victory due to T1’s prowess in teamfighting around objectives.

The Dominance of Eastern Teams at MSI 2023

The results of MSI 2023 undeniably reflect the dominance of Eastern teams. G2 Esports was defeated 3-1 by LCK champions Gen.G, and MAD suffered a crushing defeat against T1, with the third game lasting only 16 minutes and 50 seconds, making it the second-fastest BO5 in international League of Legends history. In each of these matches, European teams tried to gain an early advantage, but Eastern teams shut them down with exceptional teamfighting and macro play.

It remains to be seen if the NA representatives have any strategies to counter this dominant aspect of Eastern teams. Cloud9 will face off against LPL’s Bilibili Gaming on May 11, while Golden Guardians will take on Chinese champions JD Gaming the following day.
