Riot to Nerf Champions and Items in League of Legends Patch 12.20
The upcoming patch for League of Legends, Patch 12.20, is set to bring some significant nerfs and buffs. Riot’s lead balance designer, Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison, has already started discussing the changes that players can expect.
In a recent tweet, Phroxzon mentioned that the balance team will focus on nerfing dominant champions in pro play. Sett, Maokai, and Aatrox are among the champions set to receive nerfs. Additionally, Lethal Tempo and Iceborn Gauntlet will also be nerfed.
While the specific details of the nerfs are still unknown, it’s likely that Sett, Maokai, and Aatrox will see reductions in their early-game power, lane safety, and overall damage. Aatrox, in particular, will most likely be targeted as he has seen high presence in both the play-in and group stages of competitive play. Maokai has also been due for nerfs since his recent update, as he currently lacks weaknesses and is a strong pick in almost any matchup.
System Nerfs: Lethal Tempo and Iceborn Gauntlet
In addition to champion nerfs, Riot will also be targeting system changes. Lethal Tempo and Iceborn Gauntlet are two items being addressed in this patch. These changes aim to address the abuse of hyperscaling abusers like Bel’Veth, who stack attack speed and defensive stats to become overpowering. By reducing the effectiveness of this combination, Riot hopes to encourage carry players to build more traditional carry items.
