League of Legends subreddit introduces user-made memes, a significant opportunity for content creators

The League of Legends Subreddit Relaxes Rules on Meme Content

The official League of Legends subreddit has always been a popular platform for players and fans to discuss the game. However, there has been ongoing tension between the subreddit and prominent figures in the League community due to strict moderation of post activity.

Recently, there has been a noticeable shift towards improving this relationship. Subreddit moderators are now testing the relaxation of a longstanding rule against meme content. Specifically, the subreddit will allow “high-quality original content” even if it stems from a meme. The new rules are as follows:

  • Memes with League of Legends text or images imposed over a template should be posted on /r/leagueofmemes. However, fanart or videos that originate from remade memes are permitted.
  • Copycat posts, such as MS-Paint drawings and slightly altered front page topics, may be removed.

This change was prompted by feedback received by the moderator team over time. The previous “zero tolerance” approach towards meme content created many gray areas. Some users invested considerable time and effort into planning a video that was not entirely a meme, only to have their post deleted. On the other hand, some memes were upvoted on the front page without any issues. The difficulty in agreeing on what constitutes a meme was the crux of the problem.

To provide clarity, the moderator team shared several examples of meme-like content that had previously been banned but would now be allowed during the trial. These examples include a Kayle and Morgana face-off drawing, a new Purrgot skin idea, and a re-imagination of Bowsette in Urgot’s body.

The reason these pieces are now permitted is because the artists recreated the original memes entirely. Additionally, meme titles, regardless of the content, will continue to be removed. Therefore, if you are solely interested in creating memes, it is advisable to post them elsewhere. However, for those who enjoy creating and consuming original content, this rule change should significantly enhance the League subreddit experience.
