League of Legends Generates $1.5 Billion in Revenue in 2019

League of Legends continued its impressive revenue streak in 2019, bringing in a total of $1.5 billion. However, this falls short of the top game of the year, Fortnite, which generated $300 million more, according to a SuperData study. The global games market as a whole made a staggering $120.1 billion in 2019.

League of Legends Ranks Second in Revenue for Free-to-Play PC Games

Among free-to-play PC games, League of Legends came in second place in terms of revenue, just behind Fortnite. Out of the $20.6 billion generated by free-to-play games on the platform, League contributed a significant amount. However, mobile games such as Dungeon Fighter Online and Honour of Kings surpassed League of Legends with $1.6 billion each. The mobile games market as a whole earned three times more revenue than free-to-play PC games, and this trend is set to continue growing in 2020.

League of Legends Players Spend Less Money Than Fortnite Players

According to the study, League of Legends players are more than twice as likely to spend money in the game compared to Fortnite players. This highlights the difference in player spending habits between the two games.

Prospects for the Global Games Market in 2020

The study also revealed that the majority of revenue earned from mobile and free-to-play PC games comes from Asia. It predicts a four-percent growth for the global games market in 2020, with an estimated $124.8 billion in revenue

Despite League of Legends’ revenue plateauing since its release, there are promising opportunities for Riot in 2020 and beyond. With the release of new games like Legends of Runeterra, Wild Rift, and Riot Forge-published games, as well as other projects, Riot may see an increase in its overall revenue.
