League of Legends fan enhances Mythic item icons for easier identification

Riot Introduces Massive Overhaul to League of Legends Item Icons

Riot recently released Patch 10.23 for League of Legends, which includes a significant overhaul of the item system. However, players are struggling to differentiate between the new icons.

The preseason update brought a complete redesign of the item icons, including changes to the weapons and color schemes. Players have taken to the League subreddit to express their dissatisfaction with the new shop. Despite the negative feedback, one fan has made improvements to enhance the readability of the icons. They shared their recreation on Reddit, which has gained attention.

Fan Tweaks Improve Readability of League of Legends Item Icons

The fan’s modifications aimed to reduce clutter and enhance the distinguishability of the icons. They removed excess colors from the background and increased the saturation of certain hues. Some icons required heavy editing to make them more unique.

The dark backgrounds in the modified icons create a better contrast with the items, making their shapes more prominent. For example, the updated Shurelya’s Reverie now has a black background, which is easier on the eyes. Additionally, the bright yellows in Rhazler’s version of Locket of the Iron Solari have been toned down to prevent visual blending.

Unfortunately, the new icons pose a challenge for colorblind players, particularly those with deuteranomaly, the most common type of red-green color blindness. These players have expressed difficulty in distinguishing the highly detailed icons with similar colors.

Will Riot Address the Visual Clarity of Item Icons?

While Riot is currently focused on bug fixes and champion and item balancing, it remains uncertain if the company has plans to improve the visual clarity of the item icons.
