League of Legends Emerges as the Top Esport of 2021

League of Legends Tops 2021 Esports Viewership Charts

League of Legends (LoL) has once again secured the top spot on the viewership charts, according to EsportsCharts. Riot Games’ popular MOBA game emerged as the most-watched esports of 2021, based on the total number of tournament hours watched across multiple streaming platforms.

The data provided by EsportsCharts does not include viewership numbers from Chinese platforms, as their methods for calculating viewership differ.

In 2021, League of Legends accumulated an impressive 664.16 million hours watched, surpassing its closest competitor, CS:GO, which had 410.81 million hours watched. Rounding out the top five are Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (387.29 million), Dota 2 (347.64 million), and PUBG Mobile (216.76 million).

Some other esports games, such as VALORANT and Free Fire, came close to making the list but fell slightly short.

League of Legends’ viewership numbers were boosted significantly by its flagship tournament, the World Championship. The 2021 edition of the tournament, won by EDward Gaming, attracted an impressive 4,018,728 concurrent viewers during its grand final. According to EsportsCharts, the peak viewership of the Worlds 2021 final is second only to the Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore in esports history.

Since its release in 2009, League of Legends has established itself as the largest esports in the world. The game has gained even more popularity in recent years with the release of Arcane, a Netflix show set in the universe of League of Legends.
