International Elo Ratings and Wildcard Predictions on April 18th, 2015

International Elo Ratings

Predicting the outcomes of international League of Legends competitions is very difficult. In the past, most would agree that Korea was the dominant region. However, in the post-IEM era, this is no longer a reliable truth. To help League fans understand how different teams compare to each other, especially across regions, I have created these ratings.

Rankings of Teams

The table below displays the rankings of every active team in the four major regions (NA, EU, SK, and CHN), as well as challenger teams, LMS playoffs teams, and the teams competing in the 2015 International Wildcard Tournament. These rankings were calculated based on both major and minor, national and international competitions dating back to 2010.

Elo Rankings (2015/04/20)

There is substantial agreement between these rankings and the LoleSports Power Rankings. The main differences lie in how the top Chinese teams are ranked. While the Power Rankings have 5 Chinese teams in the top 10, the Elo ratings only have 2. EDG is the only Chinese team consistently performing well enough to earn a high rating. Another difference is in the ranking of KT Rolster. Since Week 8, they have had a record of 10-5 and have proven themselves to be one of the best Korean teams.

Of course, Coast is ranked last.

If you have questions about the methodology used for these rankings, you can find a more detailed explanation here.

Wildcard Invitational Preview

The Elo rating for each of the Wildcard teams is based on their international success and their dominance within their domestic region. INTZ has a 15-game winning streak and comes from one of the more successful Wildcard regions. On the other hand, Japanese teams have struggled internationally and DetFM had a less impressive record in the regular season compared to other teams, like the Chiefs.

The tournament is expected to be highly competitive, with the potential for upsets in every game. Even the bottom teams are predicted to win a few matches.

However, if there is a team that could deviate from expectations, it is DetFM. Their performance is uncertain due to their limited international experience and fewer games against teams from other regions. Their best result so far was a single win against CGA Legends at the IEM Singapore Amateur Tournament.
