Increased Damage: Riot Phreak Pledges to Improve LoL Voidgrub following LPL Feedback

Voidgrubs: A New Objective Shaking Up League of Legends

Voidgrubs have made their mark on the League of Legends scene in season 14, presenting players with an early-game objective to contend over. While this new addition seems enticing, professional esports teams and players have taken a different approach, focusing their attention on the bottom side of the map.

Adjusting Voidgrubs: A Request from the Chinese League

Recently, the Chinese league’s desk requested adjustments to be made to the Voidgrubs. In a video shared by Twitter user Yuuu, Lead Gameplay Designer David “Phreak” Turley responded to the complaints voiced by the league’s desk.

According to Phreak, “In the LPL, the game has slowed down and some of those [reasons] are placed on Voidgrubs. Right now, they are undertuned. Ultimately, the best pro teams would ignore them and they’d prioritize dragon instead.”

Riot’s Reflection on Voidgrubs

Considering the impact the Voidgrubs should have on top laners who are winning their lane, Riot took a moment to reflect on their purpose. Voidgrubs should provide an incentive for top laners to secure their advantage and encourage teams to prioritize top-side objectives in the early game, leading to the dragons later on.

Potential Changes for a More Valuable Objective

To address the concerns surrounding the Voidgrubs, Phreak mentioned some potential changes. These include increasing the damage buff players receive upon killing the Voidgrubs, making them a more valuable objective. Additionally, they may consider increasing the number of Voidmites that spawn alongside the Voidgrubs, and even allowing players to earn gold by killing them.

Another aspect that Riot is targeting is the respawn timer of the Voidgrubs, which currently coincides with the dragon’s spawn time. By adjusting the timers, teams will have the opportunity to fight for both objectives during the mid-game, potentially snowballing the match in their favor.

The Voidgrubs’ Impact on Gameplay

It remains to be seen whether these changes will make Voidgrubs truly relevant. If the adjustments are substantial enough, professional players could shift their attention and resources towards the top side of the map, rather than solely focusing on the dragons at the bottom side.

Reddit user FrankTheBoxMonster has shared datamined information about League of Legends’ 14.9 patch, confirming that the Voidgrubs have already received enhanced damage on the PBE server, as Phreak explained in his video.

A New Meta on the Horizon?

As adjustments are being made, it remains to be seen whether the Voidgrubs will become a significant element in gameplay. Should these changes prove impactful, professional players may find themselves diverting their focus and resources towards the top side of the map, initiating a shift in the meta.
