League of Legends (LoL) is an incredibly popular game with over 100 million active players worldwide. Changing the language in LoL can be a bit confusing, but it is possible. If you’re looking to modify the language for your LoL game client, whether because you’ve accidentally changed it or want to switch to another language, here’s everything you need to know.
How to Change Your Language in League of Legends
Riot offers two options for changing your language in LoL. You can either change your in-game language or your Riot client language.
How to Change Your Riot Client Language
Changing your Riot client language will only affect the language of the client itself, not the in-game language. Some of the supported languages for the client include English, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, French, German, and many more.
To change your LoL client’s language, follow these steps:
- Open your Riot client and make sure you’re signed out
- Click on the profile icon in the top right-hand corner and select “Settings”
- Under Riot client language, choose your preferred language
We recommend changing your client’s language to one you’re familiar with so that any League of Legends errors will also be displayed in that language.
How to Change Your Language In-Game
Unfortunately, changing the language in LoL is not as simple as selecting an in-game setting. To change your language, you’ll need to modify a file in the game’s installation directory. Keep in mind that modifying game files is against Riot’s terms of service, but changing the client’s language won’t give you an advantage in the game itself.
Here are the steps to change the language in LoL:
- Open the LoL installation directory
- Create a shortcut for the “LeagueClient” file and place it on your desktop
- Right-click on the shortcut and select “Properties”
- In the “Target” field, add a space after the existing text and add “–locale=X” (replace X with the language code you want)
- Apply your changes and use the shortcut to open LoL
Keep in mind that you cannot change the language multiple times using the same shortcut. You’ll need to create a new shortcut if you want to switch languages.

Will There Be an Easier Option to Change the Language in LoL?
Riot has announced that a new, easier method for changing the language in LoL would be coming, but there have been no updates since the announcement. It’s unclear if this feature will ever be implemented.
