How Many Placement Games Are Required in League of Legends?

Understanding the Rank System in League of Legends

League of Legends has nine rank divisions: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. These ranks are divided into two Elo categories: low and high. The low Elo ranks rely on LP points while the high Elo ranks have a leaderboard of the top 500 players on the server.

Reaching the top 500 or even the Master Division is a great achievement, but it’s not easy. If you’re new to the game and unfamiliar with how the rank system works, there is a Provisional rank that determines where you start on the ranked ladder.

To determine your rank, you need to complete 10 placement matches. Think of these matches as calibration matches where the system evaluates your skills and decision-making as a player.

Based on your performance in the placement matches, you’ll be assigned a rank that suits your abilities. Riot Games has recently made updates to the placement matches, allowing you to see your progress during this phase. Each win will increase your LP and move you up to a higher division.

Once you’ve completed your placement matches, you can begin your ranked journey. However, each win will no longer give you the same amount of LP as the placement games. Instead, you’ll typically earn 17-25 LP depending on your win rate.

Now that you understand how the placement system works, it’s important to practice before embarking on your placement matches. This will give you the best chance of starting at the highest rank possible. Good luck and have fun, summoner! We’ll see you on the rift.
