Groups’ Unexpected Contenders

The Exciting Upsets in the Group Stages of LoL World Championships

Every year, the group stages of LoL World Championships are filled with excitement and surprises. While the top teams secure their spots, the underdogs get a chance to compete against them. But sometimes, the group stages deliver unexpected upsets that leave fans in awe.

In Season 5, one of the most competitive editions of the event, there are several title contenders like SKT, EDG, and LGD. However, what makes this year’s World Championships even more thrilling is the strong competition from the “lesser” teams. Let’s take a look at three teams that could potentially cause a surprise in their respective groups.

paiN Gaming: The Pride of Brazilian League of Legends

Groups' Unexpected Contenders

paiN Gaming has generated a lot of hype as a wildcard team. Led by Kami, who is considered the best player in Brazil, this team is full of passion and emotion, ready to shine on the biggest stage.

What adds to the excitement is that paiN Gaming has landed in a favorable group. Unlike some of the other groups where a victory or two would be a significant achievement, paiN Gaming faces a CLG outfit that is unstable due to ongoing changes in their jungler position and a Flash Wolves team that isn’t too intimidating. While paiN Gaming’s most likely outcome is a 4th place finish, they do have the opportunity to exceed expectations and shock the world.

ahq: The Dark Horse in Group C

Groups' Unexpected Contenders

Group C has garnered a lot of attention, with discussions focusing on Fnatic and Invictus Gaming. However, one team that shouldn’t be overlooked is ahq, who could potentially secure a spot in the quarter finals ahead of the aforementioned favorites.

ahq proved themselves at MSI by defeating both TSM and Fnatic in the group stages. While Fnatic has garnered significant hype, it’s important to remember that they have struggled against ahq in the past. Although Fnatic has now strengthened their roster with Rekkles, ahq’s ability to compete with top Western teams shows that they are on a similar level. It’s not a guarantee that Fnatic will beat ahq, and the match-up between Fnatic and Invictus is also up for debate, making it possible for ahq to give Invictus a tough challenge.

As the World Championships draw near, we eagerly await the potential upsets that will unfold. The group stages have the power to surprise us all and make the competition even more thrilling.
