Gilius shares unusual tale of how Bwipo secured his place in Fnatic’s starting roster in 2018

How Bwipo’s Unexpected Chance on Fnatic’s Starting Roster Came About

Bwipo, a popular pro player in the European League of Legends scene, was given the opportunity to play on Fnatic’s starting roster. But what led to this unexpected turn of events?

During a co-stream of the 2023 Mid-Season Invitational, SK Gaming’s substitute jungler, Gilius, revealed the outlandish reason behind Bwipo’s chance to join Fnatic.

The Injury that Changed Everything

In 2018, Fnatic had Paul “sOAZ” Boyer as their starting top laner. However, right before the Spring Playoffs, sOAZ suffered a hand injury that sidelined him for an extended period of time.

According to Gilius, sOAZ had actually injured himself, despite the sympathy messages from fans and fellow pro players. This presented an opportunity for Bwipo to step in.

A Frustrating Set of Matches

Prior to the playoffs, Fnatic had a series of challenging matches against Team Vitality. Former top laner Lucas “Cabochard” Simon-Meslet played tough matchups against sOAZ with champions like Lucian and Jayce, with constant ganks from Gilius and mid laner Daniele “Jiizuke” di Mauro.

After one of these scrim sets, sOAZ became incredibly angry and punched a table, resulting in a broken hand. Bwipo mentioned that the 2018 Vitality roster “did him a solid,” and this incident helped kickstart his career.

Bwipo’s Rise and Challenges

As sOAZ’s temporary replacement, Bwipo seized the opportunity and eventually took over the starting position. He helped Fnatic reach the quarterfinals at MSI 2018 and even made it to the finals of the 2018 World Championship against Invictus Gaming.

Although Bwipo played three more years with Fnatic, they consistently fell short against G2 Esports in the LEC Finals.
