Galio’s Position Worsens After Preseason’s Arrival

Galio’s Performance Plummets in Preseason Update

The preseason update brought significant changes to League of Legends, particularly with the introduction of a new rune system. While these changes were underway, almost 140 champions had to be adjusted to accommodate the new runes.

One of the champions impacted by these changes was Galio, whose base health and health growth were increased to compensate for the removal of old runes. However, it seems that these stat buffs were not enough to make up for the impact of the new runes. Galio’s winrate in both mid and top lanes currently stands at a disappointing 42 percent, according to League of Legends stats site OP.gg.

Galio is currently the worst-performing champion in these roles.

Galio's Position Worsens After Preseason's Arrival

This sudden decline in Galio’s power occurred just one patch after he was buffed to be an incredibly potent burst mage. However, his AP scalings were adjusted too high, resulting in a hotfix nerf. Despite the nerf, Galio continued to perform well.

So what caused Galio to go from a powerful mage to a lackluster champion in the preseason patch? The answer is simple: Runes.

The new rune system, while enjoyable for many champions, did not work in Galio’s favor. His high AP scalings allowed him to deal significant early game damage by using AP runes in the old system. With the removal of these runes, Galio lost his early game damage potential.

The only way for Galio to deal any damage now is by opting for a rune build that grants him AP, such as Domination or Sorcery. However, by doing so, he misses out on the resistances offered by the Resolve path, which grants 130 health. In the past, Galio was able to strike a balance between AP and tankiness with his rune pages. With the new system, he is forced to choose between the two, which is proving to be a challenge.

Galio has always found strength in professional play rather than solo queue, so it may be necessary to wait until the new pro seasons begin in January to gauge the true impact of the runes on him. However, as of now, the outlook is not favorable.
