Excel Esports Close to Qualifying for Playoffs in 2022 LEC Spring Split
With only three days remaining in the 2022 LEC Spring Split, Excel Esports is on the verge of making it to the playoffs for the first time in the history of the organization. However, they still need to perform well in the final two days to secure their place since G2 Esports, who have already qualified, demonstrated their strength against them today.
G2 continues to show their momentum as they head into the playoffs by defeating Excel and forcing them to focus on their upcoming matches for a chance at the postseason. Caps, piloting a resident sand bird in League of Legends, played a significant role in securing the victory for his team from the very beginning. G2, aiming to move up from their fourth-place position, took control of the game.
The pairing of Finn’s Gwen and Mikyx’s Yuumi made it clear that Excel’s win condition relied on scaling. However, G2 had a composition that aimed to finish the game early, creating obstacles for Excel. Despite the Gwen/Yuumi combo leading to teamfight advantages for Excel, G2’s proactive play made it challenging for Excel to gain any ground.
Caps’ impressive footwork on Azir proved to be crucial in G2’s victory. He not only trapped his enemies, but also prevented them from escaping. He secured five kills in the first few minutes of the game, one of which was his own, and dodged the entire Excel team in the top river.
With a significant amount of gold in his pocket in less than 10 minutes, Caps became an unstoppable force that Excel couldn’t match. Excel’s last-ditch effort to take down Caps resulted in their downfall, breaking the Jarvan IV/Gwen/Yuumi combo that provided them some breathing room. Caps finished his first game on Azir this split with a 10/1/6 KDA and was named the player of the game, solidifying G2’s momentum heading into the playoffs.
However, Excel’s journey to the playoffs is not yet secure. They must defeat SK in their upcoming match in order to officially qualify. If they lose, their chances of making it to the playoffs may be in jeopardy.
