Former League of Legends star goes from Worlds champion to prison: Sentenced for drug trafficking

Former League of Legends Pro Player and Coach, Toyz, Sentenced for Drug Trafficking

Lau “Toyz” Wai Kin, a former professional player and coach of the popular esports game League of Legends, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison in Taiwan for drug trafficking. This sentence comes a year after he was arrested on suspicion of selling marijuana, which is considered a class-two illegal drug in Taiwan.

Toyz pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charges during his court appearance in June 2022 with the Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office. He also expressed remorse for his actions and urged others to steer clear of drugs.

The news of Toyz’s conviction has received extensive coverage. However, many current League of Legends fans may not be familiar with his achievements during his time as a professional player. For those wondering about Toyz’s background, here’s everything you need to know about him.

Who is Toyz?

Toyz played League of Legends professionally from 2011 to 2016 and briefly coached Fnatic for one month during Worlds in 2014. After retiring as a player, he took on various managerial roles in the League of Legends scene, working with teams like Raise Gaming, Stinga, and G-Rex.

However, Toyz is most renowned for his victory in League of Legends’ second Worlds Championship in 2012 as a member of Taipei Assassins. The team triumphed over NaJin Sword from South Korea in the quarterfinals, Moscow Five from Russia in the semifinals, and Azubu Frost, also from South Korea, in the grand finals. This prestigious tournament, held in Los Angeles, awarded a prize pool of $1 million.

Throughout his career, Toyz played several champions in League of Legends, but he is particularly remembered for his exceptional skills with Orianna. After his triumphant World Championship win with Taipei Assassins, Toyz only participated in one more international event during his professional career, which was the All-Star event in 2013 in Shanghai.

Prior to his arrest for selling marijuana in Taiwan, Toyz was making a living as an influencer and YouTuber.
