Fnatic Player Reflects on Career: ‘Every year, it seems wiser to join an American team’

Fnatic’s Upset Reflects on his League of Legends Career

After another disappointing split, Fnatic’s Elias “Upset” Lipp finds himself in a familiar situation. The German ADC, despite high expectations, recently reflected on his professional League of Legends career in a stream.

From Schalke 04 in 2017 to Fnatic in 2020, Upset has quickly risen up the ranks. However, he has yet to compete on an international level. While he aspires to play at the highest level, he admits that if money was a bigger factor, joining a team in America would be a sensible option.

“If I would have gone to NA in any offseason, I could have probably earned at least three times more than what EU orgs pay,” Upset said. “I’m not saying I’m unhappy with what I’m getting in Europe, but the difference is huge.”

Upset has narrowly missed the chance to represent Europe at Worlds twice, coming close with S04 in 2018 and 2019. Despite the frustrations, he still believes it’s worth continuing in the LEC.

“I think it’s worth it. It’s the chance I take and it hasn’t worked out the way I imagined it. But it also hasn’t been a complete failure,” he said.

Although going overseas and joining a team in NA is still a possibility for Upset in the future.

“Every year, it seems more foolish not to go to an American team,” he said. “You can still compete and strive for excellence in NA.”
