EDward Gaming secures spot at Worlds 2021 after dominating victory against Team WE in LPL Semifinals

EDward Gaming Qualifies for the League of Legends World Championship

Chinese organization EDward Gaming has secured their spot in the League of Legends World Championship for the first time since 2018. They achieved this by defeating Team WE with a convincing 3-0 victory in the Semifinals of the LPL postseason.

EDG’s Past World Championship Performance

In 2018, the last time EDward Gaming attended the World Championship, they made it past the Group Stage but were eventually eliminated by Fnatic in the Quarterfinal round. Since then, only Scout (mid laner) and Meiko (support) have remained on the EDG roster.

EDG’s History in the World Championship

The 2021 World Championship will be EDG’s sixth appearance. They had attended the tournament consecutively from 2014 to 2018 and reached the Quarterfinals in all but one of those tournaments.

EDG’s Future in LPL Playoffs

Besides qualifying for the World Championship, EDward Gaming has also advanced to the Grand Finals of the LPL playoffs. They will be facing FunPlus Phoenix for the league’s Summer Split trophy. FPX has already defeated EDG twice this season, including a 3-2 victory in the Spring Playoffs Semifinals.

As for Team WE, their third-place finish in the summer’s postseason doesn’t rule them out for World Championship qualification. They still have a chance to secure a spot in the lineup by defeating defending LPL champions Royal Never Give Up in the regional gauntlet.

The Grand Finals of the LPL Summer Split between EDward Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix will take place on September 2 at 4:30am CT. The regional playoff gauntlet will begin on September 3 at 2:30am CT with Royal Never Give Up facing Team WE.
