Deftly Shares: “Our Practice and Stage Performances Make Us Two Different Teams”

Golden Guardians Off to Strong Start in LCS Summer Split

The Golden Guardians surprised the LCS with a 2-0 start in week one, defeating Flyquest and Echo Fox. This positive start is a first for the team, who has previously struggled with early losses.

Week two brought even more success for the Golden Guardians when they handed Cloud 9 their first loss of the summer split. This victory propelled the team to first place, albeit tied with five other teams.

Opportunities for Improvement

Despite their strong start, bot laner Matthew “Deftly” Chen believes the Golden Guardians can still do better. After a back-and-forth game against CLG, the team suffered their second loss of the split, bringing their overall record to 4-2.

Deftly expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s like we definitely have the tools to win and I feel like our team in general feels like we kind of threw that game away. So, in all hindsight, we could be like 5-1 or 6-0 and it sucks that we’re not, but at the same time it’s definitely way better than before.”

Improvements and Communication

In their first year in the LCS, the Golden Guardians faced difficulties in the early game and struggled to transition past the laning phase. However, with the addition of Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell, Henrik “Froggen” Hansen, and Kim “Olleh” Joo-sung to the roster, the team began to see improvements.

Deftly highlighted the team’s progress, stating, “Ever since halfway through the Spring season, we’ve improved a lot on how to transition our leads…So I think that’s definitely one of the things we improved on.”

Furthermore, communication has become a vital strength for the Golden Guardians. Deftly explained, “That’s actually one of our biggest strengths now, like how we communicate as a team…We discuss all these things before the fight even breaks out. So, you know, the conditions are right.”

Facing Tough Competition

In the upcoming week, the Golden Guardians will face two LCS powerhouses, TSM and Team Liquid. These three teams are all tied for first place and will be battling it out for the top spot. Golden Guardians’ focus should be on addressing inconsistencies between their on-stage and off-stage performances, according to Deftly.

Despite their progress, the Golden Guardians still struggle with consistency. However, they have the potential to become a playoff contender and have shown promise in this split.
