Curse Gaming Relinquishes Its Name

Team Curse to Rebrand Due to League Championship Series Rules

One of the biggest brands in League of Legends will undergo a name change as Team Curse is forced to comply with the league’s new Sale of Sponsorship rule.

The rule, implemented by Riot Games to prevent conflicts of interest between teams, was put in place after the controversy surrounding Evil Geniuses and Alliance, two teams owned by the esports agency GoodGame. GoodGame’s ownership posed potential conflicts of interest between those teams and others who used their services for sponsorship, such as Counter Logic Gaming.

Team Curse, in a similar situation, is unable to promote their product, Curse Voice, through other LCS teams and therefore cannot continue as a title sponsor for the Curse team. This decision comes after Curse attempted to avoid these problems by separating their esports team into an independent venture in 2014.

While the name on the jerseys will change, the financial support from Curse will remain the same for the team. Unfortunately, this means that Curse’s iconic presence in the League Championship Series will soon be a thing of the past.

However, this rebranding may bring new opportunities for Team Curse. With new jerseys, they may finally break their fourth-place curse.
