Coronavirus mandates LEC teams to compete remotely in 2020 Summer Split playoffs and finals

LEC Playoffs Update: COVID-19 Precautions Continue

The LEC recently provided an update to League of Legends fans regarding the 2020 Summer Split playoffs. Due to ongoing COVID-19 precautions, the tournament will still be produced from the studio in Berlin, while teams will compete remotely from their training facilities. Unfortunately, Riot has determined that it is not possible to bring teams back to the studio for the playoffs safely, as accommodating everyone would be a significant challenge.

LEC Playoffs Update - Summer 2020

Director of esports Alberto “Tiroless” Guerrero expressed understanding for the disappointment this decision may bring to fans, but emphasized that the health and safety of players and staff is the top priority. This decision follows the LEC’s transition to remote play in March for the 2020 Spring Split, with cameras installed in training facilities to recreate the competitive atmosphere while minimizing risks.

Similarly, the LCK announced that its playoffs will also be conducted online due to the worsening spread of the coronavirus around Seoul. Starting from August 21, all matches will be held online, following the league’s strict safety guidelines.

The LEC playoffs are set to kick off on August 21 at 11am CT. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis.
