Construction of Artificial Reef Underway off Australian Coast with Giant Nautilus Statue

League of Legends Statue Becomes Artificial Reef Off Australian Coast

Scuba diving off the Australian coast is always an amazing experience, with clear waters and diverse marine life. Now, there’s even more to see below the surface—the giant statue of League of Legends champion Nautilus.

Last year, Riot Games set a nautical-themed challenge for players on the Oceanic server. Players earned points which were then used for the construction of an artificial reef in Australian waters. This dream has now become a reality, with Riot releasing a video showcasing the Nautilus statue—the foundation of the artificial reef—being placed on the ocean floor off the coast of Queensland, famous for the Great Barrier Reef.

The challenge was held during international Ocean Week in January of last year. Players had to win games as any of the designated Ocean Week Challenge champions in League of Legends. These champions included Fizz, Gangplank, Graves, Lee Sin, and more. Depending on the type of game players chose and their party composition, a win would contribute one point or one point per every member on their team. Once 275,000 total points were reached, Riot started building the artificial reef. The players then voted for the subject of the statue, with Fizz, Nami, and Nautilus as the choices. Riot’s goal was for the statue to become a home for sea creatures.

As an extra incentive, Riot promised to record the Summoner Names of players who earned at least three points before the goal was reached. These names would be immortalized on the statue at the bottom of the sea. Although the names will eventually be washed away by time, it’s still a great honor for those players.

Over time, the Nautilus statue will become a home for various species of fish in the Moreton Bay area of Australia, making it a perfect scuba diving spot.

The Future of Riot’s Projects

Now that the Nautilus statue is complete, we can’t help but wonder what Riot Games has in store for us next. Maybe a giant statue of a League of Legends esports player? Just imagine Faker towering over a mountain in Nepal.
