Cloud9 dominates with a 3-1 series win against Liquid in the 2021 MSS Playoffs

Cloud9 Defeats Team Liquid in LCS Mid-Season Showdown

After a thrilling battle in the 2021 League of Legends Spring Split, Cloud9 has emerged victorious over Team Liquid in the LCS Mid-Season Showdown. This marks a significant victory for Cloud9, as they haven’t beaten Liquid in a best-of series since the 2015 Spring Split playoffs. In that series, Cloud9 emerged victorious in five games, featuring players like Balls, Meteos, Hai, Sneaky, and LemonNation. However, this time around, it only took Cloud9 four games to secure the win.

Throughout the series, Cloud9 showcased a superior level of mid to late-game macro knowledge compared to Liquid. They outplayed their opponents in various scenarios, whether they employed an early game composition with Kalista or a late-game team comp with Ryze and Jinx.

In addition, Cloud9 effectively shut down Liquid’s star top laner, Alphari, with frequent visits to his lane by Blaber. This early dominance was evident in game one, where Alphari died three times before the 15-minute mark.

Even when Cloud9 fell behind early, they demonstrated their ability to make comebacks and narrow the gold gap. For example, in game three, multiple mid lane ganks put Perkz and his team at a disadvantage. However, Cloud9 regrouped, made critical picks across the map, and significantly reduced their deficit, ultimately turning the game around with a powerful teamfight.

Liquid, known for their early game prowess during the regular season, failed to exert their dominance against Cloud9. They were unable to amass a substantial gold lead in any of the four games, despite their reputation as the most dominant early team in the league, with an average gold difference of 2,096 at 15 minutes.

While Cloud9 has secured their spot in the 2021 MSS Finals, Liquid must earn their place by competing against the winner of TSM vs. 100 Thieves. The upcoming match is set to take place tomorrow at 3pm CT.
