Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets Reportedly Name Their LoL Teams

Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers Choose Names for League of Legends Franchises

The Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers have selected names for their League of Legends franchises in the NA LCS, according to a report from ESPN.

The Rockets’ franchise brand will be called Clutch City Gaming, while the Cavaliers will adopt the name 100 Thieves, which was previously owned by Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag. Nadeshot has reportedly been signed on to manage the Cavaliers’ esports operations.

New Names Due to NBA Rules

Although neither the Cavaliers nor the Rockets have confirmed if they have secured spots in the franchised NA LCS, recent claims and reports by ESPN have mentioned their acquisition. The NBA’s rules require franchises to choose new names for their League brands in order to avoid using NBA brands in unrelated sports. The term “Clutch City” was coined by the Houston Chronicle in 1994, when the Rockets overcame two home leads in the NBA Playoffs and won the championship. Consequently, “Clutch City” became synonymous with the team.

Expansion of the NA LCS

In addition to the Rockets and the Cavaliers, two other new teams, OpTic Gaming and a team owned by Joe Lacob, the majority owner of the Golden State Warriors, are reported to be joining the NA LCS under the new franchise system.
