Can MAD Lions truly compete for the MSI title and become the face of Europe?

MAD Lions: European Underdogs at MSI 2021

MAD Lions surprised the European League of Legends community when they secured their spot as the region’s representatives at the Mid-Season Invitational. Despite being an unexpected contender, the team showcased incredible growth during the 2021 LEC Spring Split.

During the playoffs, MAD Lions defeated G2 Esports for the second time in the organization’s history and staged a thrilling reverse sweep against Rogue in the LEC finals. These victories earned them a ticket to Iceland for MSI 2021.

A Second Chance at International Success

MAD Lions is no stranger to the international stage. The core of their current roster—Carzzy, Kaiser, and Humanoid—competed at Worlds 2020 in Shanghai. However, their performance was lackluster, failing to advance beyond the play-in stage. This time around, the team has undergone significant changes, including a revamped roster.

A Fresh Roster to Erase Past Failures

During the offseason, MAD Lions made crucial changes to their lineup, welcoming Elyoya and Armut as replacements for Shad0w and Orome, who struggled at Worlds 2020. Elyoya and Armut exceeded expectations, with Elyoya boasting an impressive 73.6% kill participation rate in the LEC Spring Split and Armut standing out as one of the top laners in the league.

Determined to Conquer MSI 2021

MAD Lions’ aggressive playstyle, reminiscent of the LPL’s teamfighting focus, could serve them well at MSI 2021. Their strong early game and impressive kill count indicate their potential. In Group B, they will face the İstanbul Wildcats, Pain Gaming, and PSG Talon, determined to secure a spot in the next phase.

Elyoya’s Perspective on Challenging DWG KIA

In an interview, MAD Lions’ jungler Elyoya acknowledged that their early game remains a question mark and a crucial area for improvement. However, he believes that reigning world champions DWG KIA are not invincible and that MAD Lions can potentially defeat them in a best-of-five match. Elyoya also addressed critics, highlighting the team’s victories over favored representatives from Europe.

The full interview with Elyoya can be found on the YouTube channel. MSI 2021 begins on Thursday, May 6.
