Broken Blade Reflects on G2’s 5-Game Slump at MSI 2022: ‘I Believe It Will Only Improve Us’

G2 Esports’ Broken Blade Finds Silver Lining in Rumble Stage Struggles

After G2 Esports’ recent victory over Evil Geniuses in the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational rumble stage, Broken Blade, G2’s top laner, spoke about the team’s current position heading into the knockout stage. In an interview with League of Legends hostess Laure Valée, Broken Blade mentioned that their struggles during the midsection of the rumble stage actually made them a stronger team for the final phase of the tournament.

“I think it might actually be better for us that we lost [five] games and still made it to the next stage, rather than going through without any losses,” said Broken Blade. “We learned valuable lessons from these losses, and our team has handled them well. I believe it will only make us better.”

Learning from Losses

Before the Mid-Season Invitational, G2 Esports had an impressive 12-game winning streak, winning the LEC Spring Split title. They continued their winning streak by winning all eight games in the MSI group stage and an additional four games in the rumble stage. However, their winning streak came to an end when they lost to PSG Talon on the third day of the rumble. This loss marked the first of five losses for G2, who narrowly secured a spot in the knockout stage with a 5-5 record.

Broken Blade believes that constantly winning may have hindered G2’s growth, as they weren’t able to learn many lessons from those victories. Prior to the MSI, G2 had a 3-4 record in games following a loss this season, according to League stats site Games of Legends.

“Maybe it was because we went without any losses, so we couldn’t take much away from those games,” explained Broken Blade. “Now that we have experienced losses, we are able to learn from them and have valuable discussions. I’m really happy about this development.”

Looking Ahead to the Knockout Stage

G2 Esports will continue their journey in the MSI as they enter the knockout stage later this week. They will face either Royal Never Give Up or T1, depending on the decision of the top-seeded LPL squad.
