Brand-new Vietnamese LoL team qualifies for Worlds after 4 years

Team Whales Qualifies for 2023 League of Legends World Championship

Team Whales has made history in the Vietnamese esports scene by securing a spot in the 2023 League of Legends World Championship. For the first time since 2019, a team other than GAM Esports or Saigon Buffalo will represent Vietnam on the international stage. Whales sealed their qualification with a victory over Team Secret in the VCS lower bracket final.

New Contenders in the Vietnamese Esports Scene

Since 2019, it has been GAM Esports and Saigon Buffalo dominating the international tournaments for Vietnam. However, this year, Whales has emerged as a formidable contender. In the past four seasons, GAM Esports or Saigon Buffalo have always participated in the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship. Now, Whales has served as a fresh face, breaking the dominance of the established teams.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused travel-related issues, and Vietnam did not send any teams to international LoL tournaments in 2020 and 2021. However, with the situation improving, Whales has seized the opportunity to represent Vietnam in the global League of Legends community.

Play-in Stage Challenge

Not only will GAM Esports continue their streak by attending this year’s World Championship, but they will also be accompanied by Whales. In previous years, the VCS champion secured a direct slot in the group stage, while the runner-up had to go through the play-in stage. However, this time, both GAM Esports and Whales will have to prove their worth in the play-in stage alongside other major region teams.

The VCS grand finals between Whales and GAM will be held on September 9th. The Worlds play-in stage will kick off with the Worlds Qualifying Series on October 9th.
