Arcane season to get 4K release in defiance to usual Netflix streaming plans

Netflix rarely greenlights physical media, especially considering it’s primarily a streaming service.  However, in an unexpected departure from its digital domain, it has allowed a 4k and Blu-ray release of Arcane season one via GKIDS.

GKIDS is an American indie film distributor known for introducing different international films to North American audiences. It specializes in hand-drawn animations similar to those of Studio Ghibli. It is now expanding its collection to include Netflix’s smash series Arcane, based on League of Legends, in its physical media roster.

Unfortunately, if you do not live in the United States or Canada, you will be unable to obtain the new physical copies of Arcane season one. GKIDS’ shipping and rules state that company can only ship purchases to “customers who live in the United States, Canada (on select titles), and U.S. territories” due to “licensing constraints” with its partners.

Fans on Reddit are enjoying the announcement of Arcane season one’s physical release, with many expressing their joy and relief that the series would not be lost media. Some have even joked about finally being able to get their hands on some Arcane goods, a long-held desire for many. This only builds on the show is momentum from last week, when fans received their first peek at Arcane season two.

In a day where streaming services dominate the entertainment industry, the idea of Arcane’s release on physical media provides reassurance to those concerned about the accessibility and endurance of their favorite shows. With the promise of a physical release, viewers can be assured that Arcane will remain available even if it ever leaves Netflix, which seems improbable given its popularity.

The 4K and Blu-ray releases are scheduled for later this year. Prepare to grab your physical copy of Arcane season one, and brace up for season two, which will be available on Netflix in November of this year.
